Mission has become the centerpiece of SOH—we like to think of ourselves as the “Inside-Out Church,” as a little more than 21% of our income has gone back out into the world this past year along with labor and materials.

We are actively working with several charities—a domestic violence shelter, Habitat for Humanity (our third build), United Methodist Outreach Ministries' shelters, Nothing but Nets, and UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief, which provides massive amounts of disaster relief, food, and shelter around the world.

Worship is the place we come to meet the Christ and grow in love and service and as such, we are always on the search for creative ways to bring Christ to life within our worship. We have three very different services—our Sunday 8:15 AM service is prayer, meditation, and communion. On Wednesday at 6:00 PM we have a small prayer service.

Then at 10:30 on Sunday mornings we pull out all the stops with our Celebration Choir, led by Gerrit Boglio and accompanied by Cathy Downing. The choir music is varied and often lively.

This newly reformatted team is seeking new ways to be the “Body of Christ” both within and outside the church. Fellowship opportunities, outreach into the community, welcoming new members, and caring for the homebound are just some of their concerns.

This vital committee meets monthly to further Sunday School education from the youngest to oldest members of SoH, as well as Vacation Bible School. Currently, we have:

• Paid professional staff for our youngest members
• Pre-school Sunday School led by a trained Montessori teacher
• Kindergarten to 5th grade--uses Live Big Sunday School curriculum
• 6th-12th graders tackle Christian teen issues through Bluefish.com Bible studies
• Adults are using The Grand Sweep Bible Study throughout 2009

The adult Bible study group meets Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary. Spirit of Hope is reading the entire Bible in 2009 as a congregational goal. The adults are using “The Grand Sweep” devotional materials to supplement their Bible study.

We also have two women’s Bible study groups. One has met for 16 years on Monday mornings at 11:00 a.m., in the Fireside Room. These dedicated women are passionate about Bible study and dig deep into scripture using a variety of Biblical resources.

Last year, Essence Bible study started to accommodate women who can’t meet during daytime hours. They meet in the Fireside Room on the second Friday of the month at 7:00 p.m. Their focus is scriptural study, service and spiritual development.
